Madeleine Keesing & Carrie Seid at Goya Contemporary
Takes place on March 30, 2010
JANUARY 15 - MARCH 30, 2010
Reception: Friday, January 15, 2010; 6:00-8:00 pm
While the production of Madeleine Keesing’s art has been compared to the processes of cuisine or the weaving of tapestries, there is no question that, despite their visual abstraction, the impact of these
images depends upon connections with elements of the outside world – metaphorically suggested as well as more literally referenced by their structure.
The human experience of being simultaneously tenacious and vulnerable is suggested through Carrie Seid’s use of silk, a material which is delicate yet possesses a tensile strength greater than steel. Tension forms, both physically and metaphorically, as two characteristically disparate elements meet to form the surface and contour of each piece. By combining translucent and reflective materials, the artist solidifies and objectifies the fleeting qualities inherent in light.
