Changing the Means and Meanings of Travel: The Early Railroad in Maryland
Takes place on March 11, 2010
David Schley, doctoral candidate in history at Johns Hopkins, discusses the creation of the railroad and how the Baltimore & Ohio was imagined by its creators in relation to its earliest effects on both the urban landscape and travel into and out of Baltimore. The talk draws on research from Schley’s dissertation-in-progress, “City of Movement: The B&O and Urban Life in Baltimore, 1827–77."
The final talk in a four-part speaker series presented in association with Homewood Museum’s fourth annual student-curated focus show, On the Road: Travel and Transportation in Early Maryland, on view as part of regular guided tours through March 31. Talks are held in the museum’s Reception Hall, followed by a reception.
